CanonToday, I’m sharing a fun worksheet to help your student compose their own canon.  Now if you’re thinking, “A Canon? That’s a bit tricky…” then just stop and look at this easy sheet. I’ve included the steps on the worksheet which is splits the activity into two pages  so you can choose to do both at once, or save the second sheet for the next lesson.

The story behind this activity goes like this.  Several of my intermediate students use the Celebration Series Repertoire books and one of my favorite things about them are the Inventions in Bks 1-2.  Since I love to give “You the Composer” assignments based on concepts we learn in their actual music, these work perfectly for this activity!  They also prepare students for much more difficult counterpoint writing coming soon… (like the Bach Inventions).

Hope your students enjoy this activity as much as we do!
