I’ve been using the Flashnote Derby app with my students for several years. It’s such a fun way to practice note recognition and doesn’t take up much lesson time. You can read more about how the app works on Susan Paradis’s blog here. Recently, when I opened the app I noticed some new updates that are really fun! Now, instead of just having the original horse race theme, there are 4 different choices! When you click on settings and then themes here’s what you see now:

“Fresh Air” is the original theme, but now we also have “Pretty Pegasus,” “Ecliptic Encounter,” and “Reindeer Race,” which used to previously be available just seasonally at Christmas-time. You can probably guess which one most of the boys have chosen so far – of course outer space! And this one is really interesting because instead of a race you are actually battling another spaceship. Here’s what this theme looks like:

Most of my younger girl students have chose “Pretty Pegasus.” Here’s what it looks like:

And here’s a shot of the Pegasus theme in action:

Other options which were part of a previous update include the ability to answer by playing notes on the actual piano, using a midi connection, or answering on a keyboard on the screen. This app is very customizable and now even more fun!
